Aim: To compare the data obtained by doing a rapid maxillary expansion (RME) anchored to deciduous vs. permanent teeth. Material and methods: 35 consecutive patients with a maxillary transverse deficiency problem were recruited from the polyclinic dental specialty of the University Alfonso X El Sabio (Madrid) and Morandeira Orthodontics Center (Burgos). The sample was randomly selected in two groups: (i) group RME anchorage to permanent teeth (12 subjects), and (ii) group RME anchorage to temporary teeth (23 subjects). We measured and compared the variables as indicated in table 1. Results: We observed a significant increase (p < 0.001) in upper permanent intermolar distance in the RME anchorage to permanent teeth group vs. the RME anchorage to temporary teeth group. In addition we observed a significantly (p < 0.01) greater increase at the anterior arch length in the RME anchorage to temporary teeth group. Conclusions: RME permanent anchorage group showed an increase of the upper permanent molar width compared with the RME temporary group. Anterior arch length increased significantly in the RME temporary anchorage group.
