Abstract
Introduction: Orthodontics improves aesthetics, occlusion, dentoalveolar position, improving hygiene and periodontal health. However, it can also cause alterations such as gingivitis, periodontitis, recession or bone loss. These complications are infl uenced by the technique or equipment and by factors associated with the patient. The aim of this review was to study the effects of orthodontic treatment on the periodontium. Material and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed, Web of Science and Scielo according to some inclusion and previously established. Results: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 37 bibliographic references were used between 2011 and 2020. Conclusion: Adequate orthodontic treatment can positively improve periodontal health by reducing occlusal trauma and promoting oral hygiene. Orthodontic treatment can have iatrogenic periodontal effects (eg gingivitis, recessions, etc). The combination of orthodontics and periodontics is basic for the success and stability of the treatment.
