Abstract

Chronic constipation is a frequent gastrointestinal disorder that, even though is not detrimental, has important repercussions over people’s quality of life and represents an economic burden to the healthcare system. Its prevalence ranges between 2 to 27% in western countries, making it a public health issue. Constipation is characterized by a lower depositional frequency, excessive strain, incomplete evacuation feeling, obstruction sensation and hard stools. It is more common in women and aging people. In women, multiple factors such as parity, hormonal alterations, the presence of other gastrointestinal disorders, stress, anxiety and depression favor the onset of constipation. Traditionally, non pharmacological treatment for constipation rests in three pillars: adequate fiber intake, water consumption, and physical activity. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence about the efficacy of these recommendations. Nowadays, the Mediterranean diet has become increasingly popular due to its benefits for cardiovascular health.
