Abstract

A gradual increase of written output is observed in Castilla y León between W' and 17'' centuries. This rise is due to several reasons. One of the most important ones is the demystification process that affects the writings from the beginning of 12'' century. The lay noblemen started using writing much more than they did in previous periods, but this does not mean that the clergymen stopped using it. Both the laymen and the ecclesiatics found out in writing an important instrument of power. Thus, the number of documents in Castilla y León increases as the monarchy of this geographic area is consolidating with the gradual advance of the repopulating process.
