Resumen

Among the great interest shown by Felip Pedrell for Spanish musical theatre, one of his most important musicological contributions was the retrieval and study of this genre in the XVII and XVIII centuries, a task that he especially undertook in his publication Teatro lírico español anterior al siglo XIX. In this publication, the musical theatre of this époque is documented, emphasising the reflections and commentaries derived from his findings. As can be observed in this article, these reflections become the root of studies on Spanish baroque musical theatre, given the scientific accuracy of his work. This does not hinder any attempts to establish a constant dialogue between this research and the creative needs of his own period, in accordance with the character of his musicological work.
