Abstract

Music in Kubrick’s films in general and in The Shining in particular, has a great relevance. In it’s essential due The extremely clever use of music has been a solid influence on following film music, especially in terror genre, creating an easily recognizable so-called “Penderecki style”. This article analyzes how Penderecki’s works are used in each sequence, underlying associations and Gordon Stainforth (music film editor) and Kubrick intentions to recreate the oppressive atmosphere surrounding the characters at Overlook Hotel. Therefore, these works change their meaning and imbued with the film pictures, they create an impact on the audience, substantially modifying Penderecki’s intentions when he wrote them.
