Résumé

Although the cattle ways are a part of the territorial and cultural heritage of the Community of Madrid they face an increasing risk of disappearance due to the continuous expansion of urban areas. In Spain, the Madrid metropolitan area is a manifest example of this constant pressure and the caused changes on the landscape. The al but scattered data and documents related to the different types of cattle trails represent another great inconvenience in the struggle to ease the above mentioned effects and to meet the objectives of preserving the original landscapes. The following article proposes several technical measures to facilitate better study and documentation of these cattle trails by proposing the development of a dedicated Geographic Information System that integrates different variables specifically for this purpose. The proposed model focuses on the town of Colmenarejo which is the municipality of the Community of Madrid with the highest concentration of cattle trails per km2 of territory
