Abstract

The Spanish forestry sector is facing a prospect that imposes reorient their activity toward new market opportunities, associated with the progressive budget reduction in public investment. It is necessary to promote the development of a sustainable and economically viable spanish forests. Spain have got 27 millions hectares of forest and is the second country of Europe in forest surface, but its belongs mostly to private owners. Timber industry and biomass as a renewable source of energy are the main actors of a new way, even thought it is necessary to continue maintaining the European and Spanish state aid to the conservation of the forests and their infrastructures. Forest managers face a complex web of demands in meeting industry expectations and continuing to supply forest benefits like wood and non-wood products, carbon sinks, biomass, biodiversity conservation, high water quality and recreation spaces. All this will allow us to mitigate the effects of territorial depopulation in the areas where are locate the forests, to stimulate a kind of employment, that it is intensive in workforce. Anyway the worst off are the people who live in rural areas, where there are no investments or work, so that the forest sector is the only source of development. Also forest investments can be associated to reach Spanish targets for climate change, renewables and energy efficiency, through the assurance of sustainable forestry practices
