Abstract

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions can be accounted for in different ways. While territorialbased approach used at national inventories considers emissions that are physically released within a country´s borders, consumption-based approach applied at the country level takes into account GHG emissions embedded in imports and exports. Assessing emissions from a consumption-based approach requires data from the complete supply chain of products and organisations. In this regard, carbon footprint methodologies which provide guidance to measure and quantify GHG emissions released during the lifecycle of products and organisations could make available relevant data to assess emissions from a consumption-based perspective. This paper presents consumption-based emissions as a complementary approach to the territorial-based criteria, thus contributing to obtain a clearer picture of country’s GHG emissions as emissions of both exporting and importing countries are considered
