Abstract

The alveolar cleft is a bone defect of the dentoalveolar area of the mouth, which affects about 75% of patients with a cleft lip or cleft lip-palate. Failure to repair cleft defects can lead to many problems. Although there are many protocols of action for this type of patient, there a.re still controversies regai·ding the technique, the right time, type of appliance and the best time for performing the bone graft. The pediatric dentist should be awai·e of the treatment goals in these patients and there should be close multidisciplinary cooperation with other dental and medical professionals. This paper aims to inform the different professionals dealing with children with a cleft palate and/or lip about the nature of this congenital malformation and guide them through the orthodontic and orthopedic phases. Understanding the different phases of the treatment could minimize the impact of this event on the quality of life of these patients
