Abstract

Since 2005 there has been an increase in terrorist activity in Mauritania, where the jihadi-salafist terrorism seeks for a tactical and strategical opportunity to carry out their operations. In February 2013, a new terrorist group “Ansar al Sharia in Bilad lands Shinkīt”, completes a chart of destabilizing threats to the Sahel region, in Mauritania, and a direct threat to Europe. Every terrorist group focuses its efforts on locating and determining the opponent´s vulnerabilities, and tries to maximize a particular utility since a stable set of preferences. We analyze in this work the threat that implies for Mauritania the emergence of terrorist groups on their territory, such as AQMI (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb), Ansar Dine (AD), and Ansar al Sharia in the lands of Shinqīt Bilad, as well as Mauritanian Government´s responses and determination to confront these serious threats.
