Abstract

The 23rd November and 21st December from 2013, the legislative and municipal elections were celebrated in first and second round and after several deferrals, in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (IRM). The outcome from the electoral process has determined a new interplay of forces and a new color of the political opposition. These polls are going to strengthen the actual power of the IRM´s President, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and from the political party that sustains him, Union for the Republic (UPR), clear winner of those elections. The boycott call of the named Coordinator of the Democratic Opposition (COD), has placed into the political game to new opposition parties and has enabled an undesired effect, the rise of the Tewassoul Islamist party, from Mohamed Jamil Manssur, that situates as the second political force of the country, finding a secure space in the Parliament where freely express their ideas.
