Abstract

The abundance of dance music in eighteenth-century tonadilla has been normally understood as a folkloristic and realistic manifestation of casticismo, associated with a national claim. However, through some examples from Jacinto Valledor’s tonadillas, we prove that dance music elements were used as topics with many semiotic functions, in order to get very effective works on the stage according to eighteenth-century aesthetics and the peculiar dramaturgy of the tonadilla.
