Abstract

Buildings and structures are constantly aging and deteriorating. In spite of being very well executed, calculated and projected, the passage of time and many other factors, endogenous and especially exogenous, are punishing and failing the constituent materials. On the other hand, it must be taken into account that the productive model in the engineering and architectural field is changing. We have suffered and we are suffering still one of the worst economic crises that has been known throughout the History. It has had a terrible impact on the construction industry. Ten years ago, buildings of great proportions were executed, some of them unnecessary. Now, in contrast, we need to focus our efforts on preserving and maintaining the large number of structures have been built. That is the change in production model mentioned above: It is not a question of building new elements: it is necessary to maintain the elements already in place to ensure their functionality and, at the same time, to make them better and better. In order to determinate procedures for scheduling conservation works, Risk Map was born in Italy in the mid-1990s. It is a system that is not yet sufficiently well-known that, if fully developed, would allow for the programming of conservation interventions, without causing the damage to occur effectively, which would undoubtedly bring great benefits, especially at an economic level.
