Abstract

Introduction:Dental caries is a disease that predominates in the world population and that especially affects children.Objectives:The objective of this work is to evaluate current prevention techniques to choose the most effective one and to discover if a vaccine can meet / match all the scientific criterias necessary to face this pathology.Material and method:In order to carry out this research, a review of the literature consulted in the Pubmed, ProQuest and EBSCO databases in Spanish and English has been done, using inclusion and exclusion criterias.Results and discussion:Most studies have shown that fluorides are the simplest, low-cost, and effective methods of preventing caries. Vaccines have demonstrated positive results in animals and primates, but do not yet exist in human use.Conclusions:This multifactorial disease can be prevented and controled through adequate hygiene and the use of fluorides, the most famous being MI Paste Plus. Probiotics are also efficient when used in the short term to decrease dental plaque levels and the number of Streptococcus mutans. Despite promising laboratory advances, vaccines against dental caries are still far from being a reality today.
