Introduction: the patient demands an orthodontic treatment in the hope of improving appearance and psychosocial function. It is important to be aware of the expectations of the patient because this, specifically, is the reason why the patient came in for a consultation in the first place. To know the level of satisfaction of the patient with his/her smile is an important predictive factor so that we, as professionals, can understand what their expectations are. Efficient handling requires that the patient be motivated and cooperative, and will be affected by the attitude taken by the patient with regard to treatment. Methods: in this study, 100 patients attending the University Orthodontics Clinic at the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio (UAX) took par in the survey, completing a questionnaire about their expectations of orthodontic treatment before beginning treatment. The objective is to find out the patient’s expectations for the results of their orthodontic treatment, to study the associations between these expectations and the sex and age of the patient and to discover the frequency of patient expectations for their treatment at a University Clinic. Results: relatives or patients expectations are high in all the questioned items. No significant associations between these scores and the age or sex of the patient are observed. Conclusions: orthodontic patients and their families have high expectations at the beginning of the orthodontic treatment.
