Abstract

Introduction: the treatment of anterior open bite and its stability in adult patients is considered a challenge in orthodontics. The objective of this work is to compare the long-term stability of the treatment of the anterior open bite through the extrusion of the anterior sector using the MEAW technique and the subsequent intrusion through miniplates or miniscrews. Materials and methods: a literature review was carried out through a search of the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase. and Cochrane. Publications until 2016 where the stability of the previous open bite treatment from one year to 4 years of retention in adult patients treated with both techniques is analyzed. Results: patients treated with molar intrusion show a decrease in lower facial height reflected in the angle of the mandibular plane. By means of the previous extrusion, no significant changes are observed. A recurrence between 5.59% and 21.58% of the overbite achieved with both treatments is observed. Conclusions: 1.– Both techniques are effective. Only with the subsequent intrusion do we get skeletal changes. 2.– Long-term stability does not show significant differences at the expense of the type of treatment. 3.– An exhaustive study of the patient is necessary, taking into account the possible factors. 4.– Longer term studies are needed. 5.– There is no reliable data that demonstrates the effectiveness of different methods of retention.
