Abstract

Gummy smile is a clinical condition that will affect facial beauty. The etiology of the gingival smile is multifactorial, so treatment alternatives vary. Sometimes, the patients prefer a camouflage treatment or less invasive techniques than orthognathic surgery. Material amd methods: a literature review was carried out in Medline, Cochrane, and Science Direct. Objetives: to compare the technique of lip repositioning and the injection of botulinum toxin and to establish which therapy is more effective in reducing the gingival smile. To know the stability of these treatment alternatives by short and long-term. Results: 157 articles were found, of which 19 articles have been included in our study. Discussion: both techniques (lip repositioning and the injection of botulinum toxin technique) provide satisfactory results in the reduction of the gingival smile. Although, the studies published in the literature have little scientific evidence without long-term results and both recurrence occurs. The average amount of gingival smile reduction in the injection technique of botulinum toxin is from 2 to 4 mm and in the technique of lip repositioning from 2 to 8 mm. It is necessary to conduct research with a wider sample of patients and with long-term results to know the stability of the treatments.
