Aim: assess the esthetic perception on the facial profile based on the degree of chin retrusion/protrusion modified with Adobe Photoshop using a questionnaire. Material and method: laypeople and dentists (Age 32,5±7,8) assessed the images and classifi ed them according on an analog visual scale. The aesthetic scores were compared with the Wilcoxon signed range test and the static significance corrected according to Bonferroni’s method. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests where performance for data analysis. Results: for female the best rated profile was the straight profile (p<0,001). However, for male the best rated profile was the one with the most protruded mandible (p<0,001). There are no differences in esthetic perception in any of the dependent variables: dentist, age, sex or orthodontic history (p>0,05). Conclusions: straight female profiles are rated better, where protrusive profiles are preferred for male. Male retrusive profiles are rated poorly.
