Abstract

Primary retroperitoneal tumors are rare and originate from a wide variety of tissues. The most frequent originate from adipose tissue. More than 80% of retroperitoneal tumors are malignant, of these, the most common is liposarcoma representing over 45% of cases. Extension of retroperitoneal and pelvic giant liposarcomas into the thigh has rarely been reported. The authors describe the case of an asymptomatic giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma extending into the left thigh in a 78-year old male patient. Physical examination revealed a mass palpated in the proximal left anterior thigh, below the inguinal region. CT of the abdomen, pelvis and thigh revealed a giant retroperitoneal tumor extending to thigh. The tumor was successfully excised en bloc through an abdominal and a proximal thigh incision. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged five days later. Histopathologic finding were suggestive of a well-differentiated, lipoma-like retroperitoneal liposarcoma with clear surgical margins. The patient remains well without any evidence of tumor recurrence six months after surgery. Aspects of the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of this pathology are discussed.
