Abstract

Introduction: the term “juvenile idiopathic arthritis” (JIA) encompasses a group of arthritis of unknown cause, which started before the age of 16 and lasts for at least 6 weeks. The prevalence of temporomandibular joint involvement in JIA varies between 17% and 87% in published series. Despite the frequency with which TMJ is involved in patients with JIA, consensus on treatment is lacking. Objetive: to review the properties of the TMJ and dentofacial development in the context of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). As well as its orthopedic, orthodontic Material and methods: several electronic databases were systematically searched for Cochrane Library, TripDatebase, Medline, Embase, Sciencedirect, SciELO and Pudmed up to June 2021. Results the number of studies identified in the different databases was 930 original articles in total, of which 13 publications were included in the review. Conclusions: orthopedic treatment is recommended in adolescents with class II and JIA as a protective effect of the TMJ. The surgical technique currently used for mandibular advancement while preserving the joint is mandibular distraction osteogenesis (DO).
