Abstract

Objetive: to compare the cephalometric changes produced in the treatment of an open bite using microscrews. Material and methods: a retrospective observational study was carried out, by performing a lateral teleradiography of the skull before and after treatment in 14 patients treated at the UAX between January 2014 and May 2022 for the University Master's Degree in Orthodontics. The sample was divided into two groups of 7 patients. One removed microscrews to solve the malocclusion and the other did not. Both groups are made up of the same number of men (42.9%) and women (57.1%). The mean treatment time was 2.67±1.21 for men and 2.5±1.32 for women, with a mean of 2.94±0.38. For the analysis of measures, Student's t test and Anova of factor 1 were used for the parametric form and Mann Whitney and Kruskal Wallis for the non-parametric forms. Results: in both groups, at the end of the treatment, all the variables studied were normalized except for the facial axis, which decreased in the group that carried microscrews, and for the lower facial height, which increased in said group. In addition, it is observed that there is no significant difference between the treatment time used between both groups (p<0.01). Conclusion: microscrews are an effective type of treatment in the correction of said malocclusion, but the sample size should be increased in future studies to identify significant differences between the data presented.
