Zusammenfassung

The present article takes a close look at one of the Internet’s most widespread and beloved phenomena: the meme. On the basis of a contemporary appreciation of Richard Dawkins’s classical theorization—seemingly out of touch with its present avatars, yet still surprisingly apropos in some aspects—this essay sheds light on some of the less examined features of this digital phenomenon, focusing above all on its strangely non-subjective, impersonal nature. This particular trait offers a hint that there is more to memetic communication than meets the eye, namely that memes may, in fact, be understood—following theoretical approaches by Robert Pfaller and Slavoj Žižek—as interpassive media, as elements of communication that allow us to delegate our enjoyment and thus increase our reflexive distance towards online discourse.
