Abstract

Throughout the 16th century, relations between the Austria and Jagiellon families changed from the initial rivalry for the Bohemian and Hungarian crowns to the establishment of balances that guaranteed peace. The basis of the relations was a several elements that, when prolonged in time, allowed the formation of one of the most stable borders of Modern Europe: the line that separated the Austrian states from the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth. This work analyzes several of these elements, considering their enduring character, as well as the differentiated role of Carlos V and Fernando I in relationships. Our objective is to mark the period as a moment of configuration, in which the foundations of future relations between the Austrians and the kings of Poland-Lithuania during the 16th and 17th centuries were established, as well as the forms of interaction between the courts of Madrid, Vienna and Krakow.Keywords: Jagiellonian dynasty, Sigismund I, Sigismund II, Carlos V, diplomacy, House of Austria, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
